Arctic Monkeys Digipack Analysis

monkeys.jpg
On the front of Arctic Monkeys whatever people say i am, thats what Im not. depicts a unnamed man smoking a cigarette. Straight away we can see that from the close up of the man. they are trying to portray the typical stereotype of a "bad boy". the colour scheme used is the simplistic black and white. this relates to the indie culture as it symbolises being realistic, in the sense that the world is often using bright and vibrant colours. The bands name name is placed on a white background, which helps it stand out against the black background of the man. This helps people to identify the band because the cover does not have a picture of the band to associate with.

The CD resembles a ash tray with cigarette butts pasted across it. this gives off a darker tone to the band and also links to the front cover. this also helps link the bands image to a less than happy tone, which links into realism. the cd stays away from the common conventions of what a cd would usually look like which also helps establish the band from the others in the genre.

The back cover includes the same man who was on the front cover, still with a cigarette, however he is now covering his eyes as though he has "smoky eyes". This is where the ash from the cigarette lows into your eye and gives a stinging feeling. this could suggest that he was smoking to try and loom cool and "fit in" but once he tried it he couldn't handle it which links to society and is telling people they do not have to fit in
